This is by far the most illogical piece I have ever seen regarding the Google car... or any transportation discussion for that matter. He starts out by saying that human error is responsible for 90% of auto accidents... then suggests that even if we eliminate those 90% we're all better off taking public transportation. Or something.

Fantastic tag!
Also, yeah, Wes kind of stepped in it with that one, didn't he?

Umm... there is a link to Wes Siler's "Why Google's Self-Driving Car Will Fail" post.

Basically cars = evil, non existent transport = good. Let's ignore the fact that the higher use of public transport or bicycles would increase injuries and fatalities on those means of transportation. Guess what? He used RAW NUMBERS and not PERCENTAGES to "make his point". Which skewed the results already because of the laws of statistics. If no one rides the train, no one can die on a train. If everyone drives cars, then there will be lots of accidents involving cars. Yes, way more people die in a car than on a bus. The vast majority of people don't ride on buses more than a handful of times a year. You know why? They simply don't get you where you need to be outside of dense, urban areas and even then, the bus is where you go to get bugged for food money and have religious pamphlets handed to you because people are assholes even at 7 am when your old, beat to all hell Audi is in the shop again for unknown reasons.
He also misses the point that an autonomous car replaces a current one, it doesn't add to the existing traffic. Someone in an autonomous car is someone who would normally be in a typical car. But that is also ignored.

Yeah, I started to type a response to that post....but it was too bat-shit for me to craft anything encompassing. Just back away.

I couldn't put it better myself. I want to comment and disagree with him based on sheer logic alone. But that is a dangerous, dangerous path there. Instead, I'm gonna do my best to ignore it and make sure I keep an eye out for op-ed's from Wes in the future.

Yes, that is YET BUT ONE of the many misused statistics to bolster his point.

I could turn this political but we already know where Gawker writers lie on a political level so whats the point.
You're right though, not all of us can hop on the electric bus and shuffle off to our tech start up jobs in the lower east side.

I just assumed that he's trolling. I've enjoyed Wes's writing in the past so I figured he's just trying to rile people up.

Like I said, I really didn't even know where to start with the counterpoints. There was just so much to tackle... truth be told I never cared for his stuff when he was here either. I don't like a venti cup of condescension with my Jalopnik.

Agreed...Couldn't believe that something so badly written got published on the front page.

He doesn't seem to recognize that this is a project by a private company trying to sell/market a future product and not a public works/transportation project. Does he want Google to fund new buses, bike lanes and commuter trains or something?

Sounds like it...except maybe not, because he cites fatalities there too.

Wow, just read it. What a pile of crap. He's basically saying that everyone should take public transportation instead of adding more cars to the road. Not everyone lives in an area where public transport makes sense. You always read these things from people who live where public transport is a reliable alternative, but for most of the US, it really, really isn't.
Right now in modern San Diego county, I can either drive to work for an 11 minute commute, or take public transportation for a whopping 55 minute commute each way (both according to Google maps). That turns my usual 10 hour days into 12 hour days, not including waiting for the bus to show up. Worth it? I think not.

Let's see where this is going... On second thought, nope!
